I’ve been talking about inverting a lot recently, and what you might be doing that’s holding you back.
One of those things is The Snuggle:
The snuggle happens in your bent arm hang when you round your back and snuggle your arms in front of you. In this position, it’s much hard to use your lats to support you and that’s going to make inverting significantly harder.
And inverting is hard enough, am I right?
So, here’s 5 exercises to help you beat The Snuggle. You can include these exercises in a conditioning workout and do 3 sets of 10-12 reps, or use them before you train to help get your body primed and ready for inverting.
Try it out and let me know what you think!
Are you an aerial instructor or body nerd in the greater Seattle area? I’ve got some upcoming IN PERSON workshops you may be interested in!
Your Aerial Core: Hollow body and beyond
April 9th, 4pm at Versatile Arts
$30
As circus artists and coaches, we can get really focused on training the concept of hollow body.
But what IS a hollow body? Do you know why it’s important? Do you know what it might look like on different bodies or how to progress it?
This workshop will explore:
- The functional anatomy of the core to better understand the demands of aerial on the body
- How different bodies look in the same exercises
- Cueing strategies to help our students find their best connections.
While this workshop will focus on teaching strategies for coaches, it is open to anyone who wants to learn more about this key component to training!

Hanging and Pulling: stop talking about scapula
April 23rd, 4pm at Versatile Arts
$30
As aerialists, hanging and pulling is at the core of what we do. While we’ve hopefully all learned that “back and down” is less than helpful, what do you say instead and how are the scapula supposed to move?
In this workshop, you’ll learn:
- A functional approach to hanging and pulling by exploring what is supporting you when you hang and what happens when you pull.
- What to watch out for in your students, drills to help them (and us) find a more optimal hanging position
- What cues may help or hinder shoulder blade movement and control
While this workshop will focus on teaching strategies for coaches, it is open to anyone who wants to learn more about this key component to training!

Hi, will your workshops be available to purchase as videos or will there be a zoom option perhaps? Thanks so much.
Hi Liz! This is my beta run of these workshops, so I’m offering them only in person to get comfortable with the material. Once I have it dialed in, I will definitely have online options!
